What is CIT?

  • "CIT" stands for "Crisis Intervention Team."

  • CIT is a team of police officers with special training in the recognition of, and response to, a wide variety of mental health and substance abuse issues. 

  • CIT programs are broad collaborations of law enforcement, behavioral health professionals hospitals, emergency departments and community partners that recruit, train and support law enforcement officers to reapond effectively to individuals experiencing a behavioral health crisis. 

  • The objective of CIT training is to de-escalate individuals in crisis, to divert them from the criminal justice system and connect them to appropriate behavioral health resources.
